The LSESU IMJ Society functions to educate students about journalism and the media through workshops and speaker events, while promoting networking, critical thinking and inclusivity.
The LSESU IMJ Society is the first society working to educate students about the media and journalism. Established in 2020, we focus primarily on hosting skills-and career-based workshops, with the aim of fostering discussion on media & journalism-related subjects, and developing relevant and transferable skills. We aim to host speaker events with high-profile journalists and media professionals from all areas of the industry, including publications such as the Financial Times, CNN, Al-Jazeera, the BBC, and The Economist. Through our speaker events, we hope to inform our audience about current affairs and relevant ethical issues, whilst allowing students to connect and network with like-minded individuals and industry professionals. At IMJ, we hope to encourage the development of critical thinking, research, writing, and analytical skills, while emphasizing the importance of the free press in a world increasingly plagued by misinformation and media distrust. We also believe that the news should represent everyone’s interests. That is why we are committed to promoting inclusiveness, integrity, and open-mindedness in our society and the industry as a whole. There will be a recurring newsletter and we have plans to create a website for the society. Ultimately, we aim to start a publication where members would have the opportunity to apply the skills learned by writing and submitting articles.
