Amicus

LSESU Amicus Society is the LSE chapter of Amicus ALJ. Amicus ALJ is a legal non-profit organisation based in London which helps secure equal access to justice for those facing the death penalty.

LSESU Amicus Society is the LSE chapter of Amicus ALJ. Founded in 1992, Amicus ALJ is a legal non-profit organisation based in London which helps secure equal access to justice for those facing the death penalty in the United States. We are not a campaigning organisation; we directly aid those on death row through frontline work. Death row inmates today face a one-in-three chance of being executed without having the case properly investigated by a competent attorney and without having any claims of innoncence or unfairness presented or heard. We assist those facing capital trial and punishment by providing proper legal representation and raising awareness of potential abuses of defendants' rights.

The LSE chapter of Amicus joined the 20+ UK universities which Amicus is represented in. Joining us will contribute to a meaningful cause which relies on volunteer membership and fundraisers as Amicus is not funded by the government. This is your opportunity to directly help those on death row and gain an understanding of how law firms contribute to Amicus' cause. Amicus ALJ is affiliated with many top-ranking firms including Linklaters, Baker McKenzie, Clyde & Co and more, contributing vital pro-bono work. Students can also participate in Amicus ALJ's US Death Penalty Training and gain placement programmes.

In our first active year (2023/24), Amicus LSE has held events and fundraisers including a mock trial with UCL's Amicus chapter and a bake sale in collaboration with Amnesty International Society at LSE, and we are looking to hold even more. Buy our membership to have access to events to gain transferable professional skills and meaningfully contribute to Amicus' mission. Membership will also allow you to contribute to our blog which seeks to raise awareness of the common issues with the death penalty.
