LSESU Welcome Week Freshers Fair 2023

Marathi

The Marathi Society at the London School of Economics and Political Science is a platform dedicated to preserving and promoting the diverse culture and vibrant heritage of Marathi language.

Through various events and projects, the Society seeks to celebrate Marathi traditions, arts, language, and history in LSE. It provides students with opportunities to engage with the roots of Marathi culture while fostering creativity and building a community. The Society will express through literature, food, music and art to cultivate a sense of belonging for students who share an appreciation as well as intrigue for Marathi culture. The society will democratise Marathi literature and art for the students of LSE through engaging activities on campus. The society will be a community that promotes and preserves this Marathi while becoming a safe and interactive space for students.

At this Group you can be part of:

Cultural Preservation and Promotion:

Prominent Marathi literature and expression dates back to the 13th century and the language itself to the 2nd century, the society will work to revive this overlooked prose and bring it to the students at LSE.

Culturally, the expression of the language has taken eloquent and fun forms with many forms of poetry like Powadas (Ballads), Ovi (Rhythmic prose) and Phatake along with diverse forms of storytelling, dramas, dances, classical music and creative folk art.

Society’s carefully curated events, workshops, and activities will bring to life the vibrancy of Maharashtra's heritage, and festivals on various occasions throughout the term.

Food is a unique and famous part of every Indian culture, just as it is for Marathi, the society will bring these delicacies to the students as well.

Creative and Academic Expression:

The society will look to celebrate the work of notable LSE alumni such as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, providing a deep dive into the world of political and economic thought from a linguistic and cultural dimension for today’s fast evolving society and economy.

The society will contextualise as well as translate innovative ideas and academic thought of LSE into Marathi audiences and stakeholders working in this language, especially the local governments and civil society organisations.

Recognizing the importance of intellectual engagement alongside creative expression, the Society will be a dual platform for students to express their thoughts and ideas through literature, art, and scholarly discourse.

Community Building:

The Society wishes to foster a close-knit and inclusive community that welcomes all students, regardless of their linguistic or cultural background. The historic presence of non-Marathi speaking migrants in the state has forged a connection between Marathi and people belonging to different cultures in India.

We aim to bring this culture of assimilation and acceptance of the Marathi language and its people to all the students of LSE.

This is not a group exclusively for native Marathi speakers but a platform where anyone interested in exploring and celebrating Marathi culture can feel welcomed and included.

Events and Activities:

We will host regular meetups, literary reading sessions, interactive workshops, movie screenings and collaborative activities to strengthen personal connections and promote mutual understanding and respect.

The Society will organize talks, panel discussions, and lectures featuring prominent Marathi authors, poets, historians, economists, authors, filmmakers, and other thought leaders.

Celebration of traditional festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali, Gudi Padwa (Marathi New Year), Dussehra, or Makar Sankranti with cultural rituals, music, and food

The annual magazine will feature a combination of creative works—poetry, essays, and artwork—and academically rigorous articles exploring aspects of Marathi culture, history, and contemporary issues.

या रे या, सारे या (Come one, Come all)
