Introduction

Earthrise is the first student-led environmental journal. It was launched on 24-12-2018, 50 after the Apollo 8 mission captured a world-changing photograph of the Earth rising alone above the lunar horizon. The shift in perspective that Earthrise offered was a powerful spark that has shaped the contemporary environmental movement and, 50 years on from the Earthrise photograph, we hope to be part of the discussion that will drive us towards a better future.

Through essays, news, poetry, reviews, nature writing, interviews, political activism, photography, and more, we aim to challenge the complacency around our current environmental crises – the greatest challenge of the contemporary era – and inspire new ways of seeing our shared world. We accept submissions of any form for the journal's four annual issues - Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer – as long as they comply with our editorial guidelines. It doesn't matter if you have never written before or had buckets of experience, we want your contributions and thoughts. Earthrise is primarily a place of environmental exploration and expression. You don't need to be an expert to join!

Throughout the year we will host events that are free to our members including launch parties, workshops, pitches over coffee, walks, pub socials, and film nights. We intend to develop a wider community with other Earthrise societies and contributors at other universities, and potentially organise events to bring these different groups together.
